Congress sure has passed some interesting bills recently. Never mind wire taps, warrantless searches and all that sissy shit. That's so 2001, we're used to that stuff by now. But as of now, King George is being handed the authority to lock up anyone who opposes him indefinitely and torture them. On a silver platter.
The Millitary Commissions Act of 2006 crosses all the lines the Patriot Act appologists promised would never be crossed. Most notably, it allows United States citizens to be held without trial as "Enemy Combatants"(tm) with no protections and no more recourse than their non-citizen counterparts. It also defines "Enemy Combatant" so broadly that political protesters could possibly fall under the definition even if they don't break any laws at all. In fact, the lawyers for the Center for Constitutional Rights have determined that under these provisions, the defense lawyers for Enemy Combatants could be held as Enemy Combatants.
You can also see in the above link that non-citizens have no more right to habeas corpus even in "normal" criminal cases. Which seems to put our recent harasment of Venezuela's foreign minister in an even worse light.
Fascism is not creeping anymore. It's not even marching steadily onward. At this point it's knocking you door in, kicking you in the junk and screaming "I am fascism you dumb fuck!" as it drags you away to the black helicopter waiting outside.
