It appears I have a thread you might like... ...my friend k8 is doing a classic aussie music thread... I'll hook her to this link in case you have some to add. ...I'm limited, you know.
That set me off on a You Tube exploration which kept me up until 4 am listening to some of the great Aussie Classics.
I realised that some of those older tracks are still absolute classic rock songs even for today and so I wanted to share them with you...especially Suzie who I know will love some of them.
So I'm starting a new thread so I can play rock jock and introduce you to some Aussie Rock history.
It's possible you won't have heard some of these songs and some you may recognise but not realise that they were penned or performed by Aussie bands.
So let's rock on!!!
Let's start with Hunnas
Now I guess in most countdowns we would work our way up from the bottom of the list to the top, but in this case I'm starting with my Number One first.
I'm not sure what it is about the song that is so appealing...it's a very simple song...a rock star's seduction of a groupie for a one night stand...but it's just got that something that makes a lot of people (me included) get goosebumps.
A lot of Aussies really love this song. It consistently scored high in the Top 10 Aussie favourites for most of the 90s. My daughter chose it as her bridal waltz music.
The song is ]Throw Your Arms Around Me and it was written and originally performed by a much-loved Aussie pub band called Hunters and Collectors(also affectionately known as 'Hunnas') fronted by a guy called Mark Seymour.
Throw Your Arms Aound Me (Wiki link) has been covered by numerous other performers including Crowded House and Pearl Jam and I'll include a link to the Pearl Jam cover, but please take a listen to the original first because it's got the twangy guitar that carves this song into your memory.
This Pearl Jam live cover version with Eddie Vedder and Mark Seymour is pretty hot and worth hearing the song again just to see how it’s refined with age. You’ll see from the audience reaction and how they all sing along how many Aussies embrace this song as an all-time favourite.
I will come for you at night time I will raise you from your sleep I will kiss you in four places I'll go running along your street I will squeeze the life out of you You will make me laugh and make me cry We will never forget it You will make me call your name and I'll shout it to the blue summer sky We may never meet again So shed your skin and lets get started And you will throw your arms around me
I dreamed of you at night time And I watched you in your sleep I met you in high places I touched your head and touched your feet So if you disappear out of view You know, I will never say goodbye Though I try to forget it You will make me call your name and I'll shout it to the blue summer sky
We may never meet again So shed your skin and lets get started And you will throw your arms around me Yeah you will throw you arms around me (repeat to end)
Hunnas never made it on the international scene but they continued to be one of Australia’s favourite local bands until they broke up in 1998.
Their others songs well worth a listen are:
Just Say Goodbye aka You Don't Make me Feel Like I'm a Woman Any More! Great song!!! (Shit Mark Seymour makes me feel like a woman every time I see him. Sure gets my juices flowing....hmmmmm.)
Just Say Goodbeye Lyrics Well Just the other night I come home After three months Of constant grind and travel And I went snivellin': I went crawling Around to my girlfriend's house And she came down hard upon me And she ground her finger Into my breastbone And she said, She said "You don't make me feel like I'm a woman anymore. You don't make me feel like I'm a woman anymore
You don't make me feel like I'm a woman anymore!"
And I know: I know It's been a long time Seems like it's been going on forever And my heart My heart is beating too big It's beating too big For the space that's meant to hold it
So goodnight Goodnight my little lovely. As we turn As we turn down the lights Say goodbye Goodbye to the naked truth Your skin is lookin' weary And your eyes are closing down on the day
Oh yeh, you don't make me feel Like I'm a woman anymore
Ahhh well I know I know It's been a long time Seems like it's been going on forever But just as black is white Yeah and just as night is day The light is gunna leave you And you're gunna fade away
So goodnight Goodbye my little lovely As we turn As we turn down the lights Say goodnight Goodnight to the naked truth Your skin is looking weary And your eyes are closing down on the day.
River Runs Dry Lyrics Good news for beautiful people Watching the world go by Make love in the middle of a warzone Hey - ya never gonna die
Don't rock the boat - keep your head down Just another fool in the crowd Everybody knows - you can be a winner C'mon - shout it out loud
On the fat of the land I been living Now it's only a matter of time Sooner or later - you open your eyes And return to the scene of the crime
Dig deep at the top of the heap Now you've bitten off the hand that feeds you You got nothin' but your soul to sell You got nothin'
When the river runs dry You will return to the scene of the crime When the river runs dry Salvation will rain on you one last time When the river runs dry
You got the power I got the money Another million miles to run I'd cry - cry for the future But I wouldn't get anything done Relax - abandon ship Turn your back on Mother Nature Blind luck - destiny - do me a favour
When the river runs dry You will return to the scene of the crime When the river runs dry Salvation will rain on you one more time When the river runs.. dry
Good news for beautiful people Watching the world go by Make love in the middle of a war zone All of God's children Never gonna die
You will return to the scene of the crime When the river runs dry Salvation will run on you one more time When the river runs dry You will return to the scene of the crime When the river runs dry Salvation will rain on you one more time When the river runs
I'm going home to where the river runs dry
Salvation will rain on you one more time
It's only a matter of time Only a matter of time when the river runs dry
Holy Grail Lyrics Woke up this morning from the strangest dream I was in the biggest army the world ahs ever seen We were marching as one On the road to the holy grail
Started out seeking fortune and glory Its a short song but a hell of a story When you spend lifetime trying to get your hands On the holy grail
Well have you heard about the great crusade We ran into millions, but nobody got paid Yeah we raised four corners of the globe For the holy grail
All the locals scattered, they were hiding in the snow We were so far home, so how were we to know There be nothing left to pluder When we stumble on the holy grail
We were full of beans But we were dying like flies And those big black birds, they were circling in the sky And you know what they say, yeah, nobody deserves to die
You know I, i been searching for an easy way To escape the cold light of day I been high and I been low But I nowhere else to go
Theres nowhere else to go
And i followed orders God knows where i been But i woke up alone All my wounds were clean Im still here Im still a fool for the holy grail
oh yeah im a fool for the holy grail___________________________________
You are a product of your era Zoomie... Friday on my mind is a classic though. I suggest you hunt down The Master Apprentices, Spectrum and Daddy Cool.
Suze, for you I recommend the above 3, plus Dragon (Kiwi's transplanted to Melbourne), Mondo Rock, Mental As Anything (great band despite being from Sydney), Skyhooks (the single greatest Melbourne band of the 70's), Noiseworks, Cold Chisel, Buster Brown, Coloured Balls (yes colour spelt with a U), Midnight Oil, Painters & Dockers (Nude School is a classic), and my personal favourite, the Beasts of Bourbon (Zoomie is well aware of the Beasts). If you want something a little more psycho, go for Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds.
Rose Tattoo make AC/DC sound like Rick Astley. Angry Anderson has bigger balls than anyone other than Tex Perkins (Beasts of Bourbon).
Forget Crowded House, the real "Aussie" Kiwi band you should listen to is Split Enz (the band that came before Crowded House). I think you'd really like them, they're strange enough for your taste, I think, but poppy like the Beatles without being an Oasis like rip off.
As for the Hunters & Collectors, I've never been a big fan, Mark Seymour's voice annoys me. They were a great band live though.
My local music tastes run to stuff like Spiderbait, Lubricated Goat, TISM, Butterfingers or Regurgitator (both from Brisneyland). Dave loves Butterfingers (I think I have some new stuff of theirs for you dude). TISM are very Melbourne centric, so their jokes prolly wont mean anything to you.
I always thought they did, AC/DC were too repetative for my liking, and I never really liked the Brian Johnston stuff. Bon Scott always seemed much wilder, and Angry Anderson with the Tatts was wilder again.
Actually, now that I have reread this thread, I want to make this clear: I NEVER CALLED ZOOMIE OLD!
Enjoying music from the era you grew up in doesnt make you old... its all the other shit that goes on around you that makes you old. And some of that mid to late 60's and early 70's stuff rocks as hard now as it did then.
There is a clear line from the Easybeats to AC/DC for anyone who does the research.
Bon Scott was great too, don't get me wrong. But I can't think of a much cooler way to start an album than Hell's Bells. Or a much cooler way to end it than "Rock & Roll Ain't Noise Polution", for that matter.
