I would start with how broad the topic is, then begin the actual course with the Guttenburg Bible, show how the printed wrd affected the masses, up to the advent of periodicals, to magazines, to radio, to TV, to the web. That would cover the 1st half of the course, then the second half I would focus on how current media (and "New Media") has affected the world in detail.
I actually have taught courses on 'New Media" genre but that was 8 years ago - honestly not much has changed except speed and accessibility (that is to say the concept was there - now it's a reality).
And I would DEFINATLY reference ThrashInc.com throughout the course
