I tried those things like 10 years ago and all they did was make me feel sick and dizzy.
The lozenges were probably the best aid I ever tried, but really, unless you've decided that you're going to become a non smoker no matter what and are just testing out the waters or "giving it a shot" you're going to fail.

i quit smoking May, 2007......... and i started again in October 2008. i am attempting to quit as i write this, i have tried and failed three times now. i called 1-800-QUIT-NOW and they talked to me a while and sent me some free patches. i used them for 3 days and then bought cigarettes.
i started school and then got a job at the school and got so stressed out, and i had money issues and i felt like i had no control over anything and i bought cigarettes..... i wasn't managing my stress very well, obviously.....
i am putting another patch on tomorrow... i have heard the third day is the hardest....
i agree.... i won't quit as long as i enjoy smoking.
but when i was a non smoker before, i loved how clean my breath was, and i was very active, walking and jogging, and i lost 48 pounds doing it.....
i am having trouble now with really KNOWING how much better off i was then.......
I've never quite understood the idea of quitting nicotine by getting it into your body in a different way than smoking. This may also be because I don't chew gum at all and the one time I tried one of the patches (on a 9 hour flight) all it did was make me wish I had a cigarette even more and produce an itchy rash on my arm where it'd been.
I was a two-pack a day (minimum) smoker, so cutting down definitely helped me. But like krsna said, it really comes down to just deciding to stop and sticking with your decision.
And it gets soooo much easier as time goes by. Amy's started smoking again, here and there. And it doesn't bother me at all. I can sit right next to her while she smokes and not feel the least bit tempted. I think I finally have this beast defeated. That said, I know if I had even a couple puffs of a cigarette, the beast would be back.
