It's bad enough that our POOREST live better here than 80% of the people on Earth, but ... ... FREE, GOVT FUNDED CELLPHONES AND PHONE CARDS FOR LOW INCOME?!?!?
I just included the Google search for it, I found a LOT of hits when I hear about the one here in Jacksonville: [Click, Dick]
You know, I see more Caddies and Acuras in LOW INCOME areas than anywhere else ... ... and they aren't stolen, so WTF?!?!?
Dude you have no idea. The Brits pay additional welfare benefits to immigrants with multiple wives. And bigamy is ILLEGAL there. The difference is they don't have a Jesus bug up their butts like we do.
I wouldn't be surprised if the whole thing was less about giving low income people cell phones and more about a stagnating market that convinced some local politicians to give them tax money.
I think the thing that bothers me about it is that somewhere along the way a cell phone went from a novelty or a convenience to something that is absolutely necessary and everyone must carry one with them always.
On the whole, though, giving poor people cell phones falls pretty low on the irresponsible expenditures the government makes.

Hell as soon as Nathan is born, I'm letting mine go. I bought a prepaid one because I was sick of having a cell phone. I have one now, and will only use it when I need to make a phone call. Which we made sure I had one just in case I was out and went into labour or something and needed to call someone because this is still pretty backwoods country.
