Don't read this if you want to see the movie Brokeback Mountain.
This movie was disappointing, because it could have been so much better. I'd heard so many wonderful reviews about it, but it didn't match all of the hype. It definately isn't worthy of an oscar, although Heath Ledger did a really good job acting in it.
I don't regret seeing the movie, however, because it is ground breaking. It's the first film about the love story of 2 gay men, one of which is the main character that features big-time actors, and is backed by a big-time director.
What I don't like about the movie is it's failure to develop the love story we the viewers are supposed to care so much about. Unless there is something I just don't understand because I'm not gay, it seemed to me that their relationship is based only on sex. They hardly ever see each other in the movie since they each live their own lives, each in a different state. When they do see each other, all they do is have sex and fight about how they don't have sex more. I mean, how am I supposed to feel compassionate about the supposed romance of two men, both married with children, who barely ever see each other over a twenty year span and when they finally do, it's just to have sex.
They hardly ever talk to each other, unless it's to fight about how one wants more and the other doesn't. Since Heath Ledger's character was the main character, they barely showed the other one. So when he died, I felt nothing. I didn't care that he died, because his character hadn't been developed other than a guy that wants to be in a relationship with another guy that only wants to meet for sex. We don't see much of his life other than their brief meetings.
I assume this film was supposed to produce some type of emotional response, but it failed in that aspect miserably. It sent no message to me, nor did it teach me anything. Wasn't that it's purpose? I didn't even sympathize with the characters.
Needless to say, this could have been a good movie if only more focus was given to it's original purpose. Which was to show how difficult and trying it was for someone who didn't fit the social expectation of man loving woman and likewise. To have you empathize for two men in love, who couldn't be together, and learn how cruely they were treated for just wanting to be with the one they loved. It didn't do that.
the gay guy at work saw it,he was all like "omg! i totally cried!"
