I'm always asked what the first videos on MTV are ...
I tell them, simple, "Video Killed The Radio Star" - The Buggles, was the first ...

People challenge me quite a bit on this, however, I know for a fact that one of the first videos was also Peter Schilling's "Major Tom", only there was a twist to it ...
While I can't find the ORIGINAL video I remember, I knew for a fact that it was in GERMAN ...
I have found a performance where he does, in fact, perform the song in German ...
[Click, Dick]

The original song/video aired on MTV in German and was a hit, so they added an English version shortly thereafter ...
Remember, videos were more the rage in EUROPE [i]before[/i[ they hit here, and they only had a handful of US/English videos ...

I'll find the original video I'm speaking of, as well as the first 10 or so videos played that opening day. Meanwhile, enjoy ...

# "You Better Run" by Pat Benatar - MTV Video

# "You Better You Bet" by The Who - MTV Video
# "Little Suzi's on the Up" by Ph.D. - MTV Video
# "We Don't Talk Anymore" by Cliff Richard - MTV Video

While we're on it, here's another song ported to/from German:
Info: Aqua is a Danish-Norwegian dance-pop group, perhaps best known for their 1997 breakthrough single:

I'd be interested to hear what Jello or any of the other members of DK think about fuckin' MTV today. I mean, MTV in 1985 probably sucked if you were as non-mainstream as they were, but I'd take the 80s version of MTV (or VH1 for that matter) over their modern-day counterparts anytime!

You mean where they ACTUALLY played videos? When does either channel actually PLAY videos anymore? Every time I pass by either of them, it's always some stupid reality tv show.

Earlyish in the morning one of them plays videos still, I think. Amy sometimes puts it on then. I tend to just skip both channels without even looking at what's on. Blech.

Think about this; they had to make an MTV2 to play music, and it's even rare there now ...

Yeah it's really sad that they made MTV2 specifically to be more like MTV used to be and it quickly turned to shit. Isn't there an MTV3 now?

I'm actually glad that VH1 has evolved into the celebrity centered reality show monster that it is today. At least it entertains me. I stopped liking any kind of music that they might play on TV a good decade ago, so it doesn't really matter to me. What does piss me off though is when channels like VH1 have lists of the best "metal" bands or anything else that has to do with metal because they wouldn't know fucking metal if it fucked them in the ear.

If there's ANYTHING to do with MUSIC in a title of a network, it should be about MUSIC ...
