I went way out on a limb and took in a 51 year old Neighbor who's husband left her back in september. She has been a house wife for 20+years therefore has no car, no job, no friends, etc...
He left her to go live with another woman, and since the power, heat, etc has all been off. I just found out about this a couple days ago when I took her in. ON TOP of that she has chronic bronchitis and arthritis, and hasn't had any medication, food, or a shower in months. Turns out he would show up every couple of days cause somehow she got food stamps, and he would take them. By the time I encountered her she weighs about 75 lbs and looks older then my 74 year old mother in law. I took her to the doctor, got her her prescriptions, and hooked her up at Micah's Place, a VERY private shelter for abused women.
72 hours later they are sending her home. She told them about him sneaking in at 3 am and tossing her around, about him putting a gun in her mouth and saying if she ever talked to anyone he'd kill her....
And they think 'She Can Do This On Her Own'... because she never filed a police report. They gave her contact #'s and addresses of places that can help her. She doesn't own a vehicle and has no phone or electricity..... And he is still out there.
So now either me or my wife need to go to this 'undisclosed location' and pick her up and send her to her death. If chance didn't happen, If we hadn't stopped on the road just to talk to a woman walking with a cane... we would have never known, She would have died in that house and weeks or months would have passed before anyone knew.
The real irony - her neighbor is a Nassau county sheriff.
